Hey there!

I’m David and welcome to my website!

I am a Master’s student in Computer Science at McGill University co-supervised by Prof. Derek Ruths and Prof. Andrew Piper as a part of the Network Dynamics Lab and .txtlab. I’m (very) broadly interested in social issues and social dynamics, and how NLP can help us better understand them. In my master’s research, I’m using NLP to study narratives both from a cultural values standpoint, but also towards better understanding how narratives impact people’s beliefs and behaviour, and influence societal discourse. Overall, I’m an advocate for using AI and data science to help create positive change and make technology beneficial for everyone.

Before starting my master’s, I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Carleton University. During my degree, I had experiences working as a Machine Learning Intern at Kinaxis and a Data Scientist at Global Affairs Canada. I also led workshops for Carleton University’s AI Society.

In another life, I taught English as an Assistant Language Teacher in Japan, and in another other life, I studied Physics and Mathematics at the University of Ottawa and was briefly a solar cell researcher at the SUNLAB.

Outside of research, I enjoy being outdoors (backpacking, climbing, skiing, etc.), going on adventures, cooking, and learning about world history, religions, psychology, and a bunch of other stuff.
